Mud Pump Liner Size & Compatibility Quick Chart

Use this table as a sourcing reference, not as a final installation approval. Maximum liner bore, commonly published liner sizes and actual replacement availability are not the same thing. The final liner should be confirmed against the exact pump model, fluid-end configuration, piston, operating pressure and existing replacement data.

Mud Pump Liner Bore to Matching Piston Size

The nominal piston diameter normally matches the nominal liner bore. However, nominal diameter alone does not prove full interchangeability. Piston hub design, rod connection, elastomer, liner geometry and pump model must still be confirmed.

How Does Liner Size Affect Mud Pump Pressure and Flow?

Smaller liner bores generally increase pressure capability but reduce displacement. Larger liner bores increase displacement but reduce the pressure available at the same pump power and operating limits. The actual maximum pressure is limited by the lowest applicable limit among fluid-end rating, power / rod load, liner-piston configuration and operating conditions.
Smaller Liner Bore

↑ Higher pressure capability
↓ Lower displacement
Larger Liner Bore

↓ Lower pressure capability
↑ Higher displacement

F-1600 Liner Size, Flow & Pressure Reference

The following is a published-style performance reference for a standard 5,000 psi F-1600-type configuration at 120 SPM. It shows why the liner bore must be selected together with the required pressure and displacement.

F-1600 Liner Bore Approx. Flow @ 120 SPM Reference Max. Pressure
4" 235 GPM 5,000 psi
4-1/2" 294 GPM 5,000 psi
5" 367 GPM 5,000 psi
5-1/4" 404 GPM 5,000 psi
5-1/2" 444 GPM 5,000 psi
5-3/4" 486 GPM 5,000 psi
6" 529 GPM 4,665 psi
6-1/4" 574 GPM 4,299 psi
6-1/2" 620 GPM 3,981 psi
6-3/4" 670 GPM 3,688 psi
7" 720 GPM 3,423 psi
Reference only: Published pump performance values depend on assumptions such as SPM, mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, rod load and fluid-end rating. Use the table for selection logic and confirm the final operating point for the exact pump.

What does this mean for an F-1600?

A 5" liner provides much less displacement than a 7" liner, but it can operate at a higher pressure limit in a standard 5,000 psi configuration. A 7" liner increases flow significantly but is pressure-limited by the pump’s power / rod-load relationship before reaching 5,000 psi.

F-1600 High-Pressure 7,500 PSI Fluid-End Example

A high-pressure fluid-end upgrade changes the pressure ceiling, but it does not mean every liner size can operate at 7,500 psi. Larger bores remain limited by power and rod load.

Liner / Piston Approx. Flow @ 120 SPM Reference Max. Pressure
4-1/2" 297 GPM 7,500 psi
5" 367 GPM 6,723 psi
5-1/2" 444 GPM 5,556 psi
6" 529 GPM 4,669 psi
6-1/2" 620 GPM 3,978 psi
7" 720 GPM 3,430 psi

PZ-11 Liner Size, Flow & Pressure Reference

The PZ-11 / PZL is a useful example because its standard published performance clearly shows the trade-off between liner bore, pressure and displacement at a rated speed of 115 SPM.

PZ-11 Liner Bore Approx. Metric Flow @ 115 SPM Reference Max. Pressure
5" 127 mm 323 GPM 5,000 psi
5-1/2" 140 mm 390 GPM 5,000 psi
6" 152 mm 465 GPM 5,000 psi
6-1/4" 159 mm 504 GPM 4,899 psi
6-1/2" 165 mm 545 GPM 4,529 psi
6-3/4" 171 mm 588 GPM 4,200 psi
7" 178 mm 632 GPM 3,905 psi

PZ-11 High-Pressure 7,500 PSI Fluid-End Example

PZ-11 Liner Bore Flow @ 115 SPM Reference Max. Pressure
5" 322.7 GPM 7,500 psi
5-1/4" 355.7 GPM 6,942 psi
5-1/2" 390.3 GPM 6,326 psi
5-3/4" 426.7 GPM 5,787 psi
6" 464.4 GPM 5,317 psi
6-1/4" 504.0 GPM 4,899 psi
6-1/2" 545.1 GPM 4,530 psi
6-3/4" 587.7 GPM 4,200 psi
Key lesson: changing to a smaller liner can increase the pressure capability of an existing pump within the power-end, rod-load and fluid-end limits, but it reduces displacement. It does not increase the rated pressure of the fluid end itself.

Can the Same Mud Pump Use Different Liner Sizes?

Yes. Many drilling mud pumps are designed to operate with several liner bores. The selected bore changes pump displacement and the pressure available within the pump’s power, rod-load and fluid-end limits.

Required Pressure

Higher pressure requirements usually move the selection toward a smaller liner bore, subject to the fluid-end rating.

Required Flow

Higher displacement usually moves the selection toward a larger liner bore.

Pump Power

Horsepower and rod-load limits determine how much pressure can be generated at a given bore.

SPM

Pump speed directly affects displacement and must be included when comparing GPM values.

Piston

The nominal piston size must match the selected liner bore and correct pump configuration.

Fluid End

A 5,000 psi fluid end and a 7,500 psi fluid end can have different allowable operating envelopes.

Are Mud Pump Liners Interchangeable Between Brands?

They can be interchangeable when the critical dimensions and pump configuration match, but brand name or nominal bore alone is not enough. Interchangeability should be confirmed using the pump model, reference part number, liner ID, OD, length, flange / sealing geometry, piston relationship and operating requirement.

If you have an existing part number, old liner, drawing or sample, see How to Source a Replacement Mud Pump Liner by Model, Part Number, Drawing or Sample.

Mud Pump Liner Size & Compatibility Questions

What size liner does an F-1600 mud pump use?

F-1600 pumps commonly use multiple liner bores up to approximately 7" / 180 mm. The exact bore should be selected based on the required pressure, flow, piston size and fluid-end configuration.

What is the maximum liner size for an F-1300?

Published F-1300 specifications commonly show a maximum liner bore of approximately 7" / 180 mm, with multiple smaller bore options available for higher-pressure operating points.

What liner sizes are used on PZ-9 mud pumps?

Published PZ-9 replacement references commonly include 4", 4-1/2", 5", 5-1/2", 6", 6-1/4", 6-1/2" and 7" liners.

Does GPEPUMP supply PZ-11 mud pump liners?

Yes. GPEPUMP supports PZ-Series mud pumps and corresponding replacement parts, including PZ-11 liner and piston matching based on the exact model and fluid-end configuration.

What liner sizes are used on 3NB-1600 pumps?

Published 3NB-1600 performance series commonly include 140, 150, 160, 170, 180 and 190 mm liners, while some high-pressure variants publish a wider series. Final compatibility should be confirmed by the exact pump configuration.

Does piston size match the liner bore?

The nominal piston diameter normally matches the nominal liner bore, but final interchangeability also depends on piston design, rod connection, elastomer, liner geometry and pump model.

Can one mud pump use different liner sizes?

Yes. Many mud pumps use multiple liner bores to balance pressure and displacement. Smaller bores support higher pressure capability, while larger bores increase displacement.

Does a smaller liner always increase mud pump pressure?

A smaller liner can increase pressure capability within the pump’s power-end, rod-load and fluid-end limits. It cannot raise the rated pressure of a fluid end beyond its design limit.

Does a larger liner increase mud pump flow?

Yes, at the same stroke and SPM, a larger liner bore increases displacement. The trade-off is lower available pressure within the same power and rod-load limits.

Can I install a ceramic liner in place of a metal liner of the same nominal size?

It may be possible when all critical dimensions, sealing surfaces, piston relationship and pump configuration match. Material substitution should still be reviewed for the operating condition.

Are F-Series liners interchangeable between different manufacturers?

They may be interchangeable when the critical dimensions and pump configuration match. Model name and nominal bore alone are not sufficient for final confirmation.

Can GPEPUMP confirm liner size from a part number?

Yes. GPEPUMP can use an OEM/reference part number as a cross-reference and confirm it against the pump model, bore, dimensions, drawing or sample when required.

Can GPEPUMP manufacture a non-standard replacement liner?

GPEPUMP can review non-standard or legacy liner requirements using dimensions, drawings, operating information or a physical sample before production.
