Description

High-Horsepower Quintuplex Frac Pump Overview

A quintuplex frac pump is a high-pressure positive-displacement pump that uses five plungers to deliver fracturing fluid into a well at the required pressure and flow rate.

GPE quintuplex frac pumps are designed for hydraulic fracturing, acidizing and other demanding pressure-pumping operations. The range includes 2500 HP, 2800 HP, 3000 HP and 5000 HP model classes for different power, rod-load, stroke and package requirements.

The five-plunger arrangement provides more displacement events per crankshaft revolution than a triplex design. When correctly configured, this can support high flow with reduced pressure fluctuation and smoother discharge under demanding operating conditions.

Final pressure and flow capability depends on the selected plunger diameter, pump speed, fluid-end pressure rating, valve configuration, rod-load limit, fluid properties and duty cycle. Every application should be confirmed against an approved performance curve.

*The published pressure value for the 2800 model applies only to an approved plunger and fluid-end configuration. It must not be assumed for every operating point or package.

The table provides model-reference information. Final rated pressure, delivered flow, operating speed, drive power and continuous-duty capability must be confirmed for the selected configuration.

How a Quintuplex Frac Pump Works

The prime mover supplies mechanical power through the drive train and gearbox to the pump crankshaft. The crankshaft converts rotary motion into reciprocating movement at five plungers.

During the suction stroke, fluid enters the fluid end through the suction valves. During the discharge stroke, the plungers pressurize the fluid and force it through the discharge valves into the high-pressure flowline and manifold.

Pressure is created by system resistance rather than by the pump alone. Flow is determined mainly by:

  • Plunger diameter
  • Stroke length
  • Pump speed
  • Number of plungers
  • Volumetric efficiency

Theoretical hydraulic horsepower can be estimated from pressure and flow, but pump selection must also consider mechanical efficiency, rod load, fluid-end rating, suction conditions, duty cycle and drive-system limits.

Pressure, Flow and Plunger Selection

Frac pumps should not be selected from horsepower alone. A complete engineering review should include:

  • Normal and maximum discharge pressure
  • Minimum, normal and maximum flow
  • Required hydraulic horsepower
  • Available input horsepower
  • Plunger diameter
  • Stroke
  • Pump operating speed
  • Rod-load limit
  • Fluid-end pressure rating
  • Mechanical and volumetric efficiency
  • Fluid density and viscosity
  • Proppant concentration and particle size
  • Suction pressure and acceleration head
  • Continuous or intermittent duty
  • Ambient temperature and altitude
  • Gearbox and drive-system limits

A smaller plunger can support higher pressure at a lower hydraulic force, but delivers less displacement per stroke. A larger plunger increases flow but also increases hydraulic load at the same pressure.

Send GPE your required pressure, flow and fluid conditions. Our engineering team can evaluate the pump model, plunger size, operating speed, fluid end and drive configuration.

Key Design Features

Five-Plunger Configuration

The quintuplex arrangement uses five plungers operating through the crankshaft and power end. The additional plungers can provide smoother discharge and reduced pressure fluctuation compared with a comparable three-plunger arrangement.

High Rod-Load Capacity

The power end is designed around the rated rod-load and power requirements of each model. Final operating pressure must remain within the approved rod-load envelope for the selected plunger diameter.

Heavy-Duty Power End

The power end includes the gearbox, crankshaft, connecting rods, crossheads, bearings and lubrication system required to transfer mechanical input to the plungers.

The 2500–5000 HP range is designed for demanding oilfield pressure-pumping service, subject to the approved operating envelope of the selected model.

Configurable High-Pressure Fluid End

Fluid-end options can be evaluated according to:

  • Required pressure rating
  • Standard or sour service
  • Fluid chemistry
  • Proppant concentration
  • Corrosion requirements
  • Valve and seat arrangement
  • Packing configuration
  • Suction and discharge connections

Available pressure-containing materials may include high-strength alloy steel, stainless steel and other approved corrosion-resistant materials.

Flexible Plunger and Packing Options

Different plunger diameters can be combined with compatible packing systems to meet specific pressure and flow requirements.

Packing selection should consider fluid type, temperature, lubrication, abrasive solids and expected maintenance interval.

Drive and Package Integration

Subject to engineering review, the frac pump can be supplied as:

  • Bare power end
  • Complete pump assembly
  • Pump and gearbox package
  • Diesel-driven frac pump package
  • Electric-driven frac pump package
  • Skid-mounted pumping unit
  • Trailer-mounted package
  • Integrated control and monitoring system

Model Selection Guidance

2500 HP Quintuplex Frac Pump

The 2500 HP model can be evaluated for fracturing and acidizing applications where an 8-inch stroke and 192,325 lbf rated rod load match the required operating envelope.

2800 HP Quintuplex Frac Pump

The 2800 HP model uses an 8-inch stroke and a rated rod load of 229,305 lbf. A published configuration is available for pressures up to 140 MPa, subject to confirmation of the plunger, fluid end, speed and duty point.

3000 HP Quintuplex Frac Pump

The 3000 HP model uses a 10-inch stroke and a rated rod load of 230,000 lbf. Its longer stroke can support different displacement requirements, but final flow and pressure must be confirmed from the approved performance curve.

5000 HP Quintuplex Frac Pump

The 5000 HP model uses a 12-inch stroke and a rated rod load of 380,000 lbf. It is intended for high-power, heavy-fracturing applications requiring a carefully engineered pump, drive, fluid end, cooling and control package.

Triplex vs Quintuplex Frac Pump

A triplex pump has three plungers and can be a practical choice for cementing, general pressure pumping and some fracturing duties when its pressure, flow and rod-load envelope meets the application.

A quintuplex frac pump has five plungers and is generally selected when higher flow, reduced pressure fluctuation or very high horsepower is required.

For 400–2250 HP general pressure-pumping applications, compare our Triplex Plunger Pump range.
